#1. The Killings at Badger's Drift [1987], 8 hours 26 mins, CD (32kbps/22kHz)
Badger's Drift is a tranquil English village, home to Miss Emily Simpson, a kindly, well-liked spinster. When she is murdered, Detective Chief Inspector Barnaby is asked to investigate. Graham's crime fiction is sometimes of the gentle Miss Marple type and Barnaby is a loveable character, easy on the eye and brain. However this novel has some clout in it. This is not a tale of gentle village life but of the running sores which poison the undergrowth. Amongst the pretty flowers and plants there is greed and there are feuds. Complicated relationships have Barnaby on his toes grappling with age-old ills and gripes which have festered. This is rich in plot and characters. A very good read indeed. (JaneB)

#2. Death of a Hollow Man [1989], 11 hours 10 mins, CD
For Detective Chief Inspector Barnaby, a visit to the Causton Amateur Dramatic Society’s production of Amadeus is not an ideal evening’s entertainment. But loyalty to his wife Joyce means that attending the first night is a must. Backstage, nerves are fraying. The leading man is taking his role far too much to heart. For Salieri (alias Essalyn Carmichael), suspecting that his wife is having an affair, has decided to wring the truth out of the guilty party on stage. His final act proves to be a pièce de résistance and when the scene takes a particularly gruesome turn, Barnaby finds that his professional skills are called to the fore.

#3. Death in Disguise [1992], 14 hours 2 mins, ED
When a death at the Elizabethan manor house is announced to the village, few are surprised - for it is home to a most unlikely bunch of New Age oddballs and it was only a matter of time before one of them came to a bad end. This time it was an accident. However, the next death is murder. To Chief Inspector Barnaby, hurriedly summoned to the scene, it is immediately apparent that the case includes the most bizarre suspects he has ever encountered...

#4. Written in Blood [1994] , 14 hours 17 mins, ED
The Midsomer Worthy Writers' Circle invites author Max Jennings to speak to them. Circle member Gerald Hadleigh is opposed to the choice but refuses to explain. He asks fellow member Rex St. John to stay with him throughout Jennings's visit. But after the event, the elderly St. John is tricked into departing, leaving Hadleigh alone with Jennings. The next morning, Hadleigh is found bludgeoned to death and Jennings is gone. The members of the Writers' Circle respond variously. St. John falls into a deep depression; Laura Hutton, whose love of the victim was unrequited, pitches into a days-long crying and drinking jag; Honoria Lyddiard evinces little reaction; her sister-in-law, Amy, and Sue Clapton are suitably shocked. Sue's husband, Brian, seems almost "gleeful." The skill with which Graham evokes these characters and explores their individual, often damaged, emotional histories rings of Rendell and P.D. James. The few too many coincidences in the plot will be forgiven for the crisp pace and satisfying twist at the end. (PW)

#5. Faithful Unto Death [1996] , 13 hours 37 mins, ED
When Simone Hollingsworth fails to turn up at bell-ringing practice, her fellow campanologists are unsurprised. Bell-ringing, it seems to the villagers of Fawcett Green, is just Simone's latest hobby to have fallen by the wayside. Only her neighbors suspect the worst, for Simone's husband has been behaving very oddly. When the discovery of a body draws Chief Inspector Barnaby to the village, it soon becomes apparent that unravelling the mystery will stretch the Inspector's powers of persuasion to the full...

#6. A Place of Safety [1999] , 13 hours 37 mins, CD (32kbps/22kHz)
When ex-vicar Lionel Lawrence opens his rectory to rehabilitate a stream of young offenders, he has no idea of the consequences, least of all that they will include blackmail and murder. The mysterious disappearance of wild Carlotta seems to involve both. Chief Inspector Barnaby has a shrewd idea of the identity of the violent individual behind Carlotta’s disappearance, but he hasn’t a shred of evidence to support his hunch...

#7. A Ghost in the Machine [2004] , 18 hours 31 mins, CD (32kbps/22kHz)
Forbes Abbot village, for all its old-fashioned charm, is not quite the close-knit community it appears to be. And on occasion the little differences and squabbles can become downright violent. But no one - not even the local medium - could possibly have predicted murder.
Except, of course, for Detective Chief Inspector Barnaby - he has encountered many intriguing cases in his years on the force. And the case of the ghost in the killing machine is one to test even the most experienced of detectives...
